When it comes to everything in life, and especially your home, everyone has different tastes. One of the hardest decisions to make when it comes to your home is choosing the right design style. After all, you’ll have to live in it every day so make sure you opt for something that reflects who you are and what you think looks good.

Furniture stores can offer a range of different styles for you to choose from. Some stores are specific to one style and others, like Dodd’s, have a selection of home furniture that can appeal to many different people. Companies like Ashley Furniture offer a wide range of furnishings that can fit whatever look you’re going for, but before you get to the fun part of picking everything out, you need to decide what you want!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with all the different styles of design there are, we’ve come up with a list of some of the most popular interior design styles. There are so many, we can’t list them all, but we’ve compiled a list of our personal favourites.

Modern is a design style that incorporates clean lines, a colour palette that is very similar and the use of metal or glass. It is a simple style that is often referred to as sleep and does not include a lot of accessories.

Minimalist design has been popular for a while now. It takes that modern look and makes it even simpler. The colours tend to be neutral and all the furnishings look simple and streamlined. Minimalist design doesn’t have that in-your-face look, it’s functional and clean.

Traditional style is all about classic details, lavish furnishings, and a ton of accessories. It has that semblance of Europe; dark wood, rich colours and elaborate details make up the traditional style coupled with various patterns. It’s all about depth and layering.

Contemporary design incorporates the here and now. Often confused with modern design, contemporary is a fluid look which can incorporate curves and doesn’t rely on one particular look or style.

Mid-Century Modern
Mid-Century Modern is a fun design throwback to the mid-20th century that includes fun retro looks. These include amusing furnishings such as egg-shaped chairs, patterned rugs and an inside that transitions smoothly to the outside. Natural colours are predominant in this design style.

Hollywood Glam
Hollywood Glam isn’t for everyone, but it sure looks swanky! It’s always dramatic, and for anyone who loves to make a statement. Colours are often bold and velvet is a favourite fabric in this design style. If you like to stand out, this is the one for you.
