If you live on Vancouver Island, you know how dreary the winters can get around here with the seemingly endless rainfall. We find ourselves spending less time celebrating the summer on outdoor patios and more time sipping hot tea indoors as winter cometh.
Naturally, you start noticing things around your home. There’s a faucet that needs fixing, a drain that needs to be unclogged, stuff like that. One rainy Saturday morning, you’re sitting at home and find your mind completely fixated on the walls, “What was I thinking when I picked this colour?”
Listen, it happens to the best of us — our tastes change. Sometimes, we pick a colour that was cool (or we thought was cool) at the time we painted the rooms in our home. As trends, and our tastes, change, it’s important to keep up. You likely don’t want to have a room coloured like it’s straight out of a 1988 Tim Burton film. If it’s been a minute since you gave the rooms in your home a fresh coat of paint, take a look at some of these colour trends that are oh so hot right now.
Pantone recently named Ultra Violet its 2018 Colour of the Year. They pointed out that the colour “suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now.” Quite the description indeed, but they forgot to mention that it looks great as well.
While Ultra Violet is certainly in the spotlight right now, different shades of purple are also fun to play around with. For a very lush and luxurious look, a deep purple shade can add a strong element of elegance to a living room or bedroom. If you’re looking for something light and breezy, a nice lavender can instil a refreshed feeling to a space lacking depth.
Who Said Black Isn’t a Colour?
Some people will tell you black is simply a shade and to those people — all you need is a bit of creative imagination.
On the surface, painting a space in your home black sounds a little dark and uninteresting, but it’s all about the details. While painting an entire room black is very Edgar Allan Poe, think of it as more of an accent colour.
For example, a modern white bathroom can really stand out with certain black pieces. Whether that’s a trim on white paint or some black tiling, the sheer contrast between black and a much lighter colour can be bold and beautiful.
Red Is Still Hot
When it comes to using red in your space, it’s generally thought of as a statement colour. It’s a talking point in many ways. You want people to come in and notice the vibrant energy that the colour gives off, and the only real way to do so is with a very bold shade.
You want to exude true confidence with a red paint. The goal is to make the space pop with a warm ambiance that's immediately recognizable. It’s not the easiest colour to play around with, but implementing it in the proper way can make your space stand out in a powerful manner.
