On paper, it might seem like metal and wood are sworn enemies, because they’re so different in so many ways. Wood often represents a warm and cozy feeling, while metal is cold and practical — so how can they co-exist in a home?

Metal and wood together make up a lot of furniture, but let's take that out of the equation. Even when you separate the two on their own, there are some unique home design ideas you can do with them as complementary pieces. Yes, a sofa may have metal and wood components in it, but you need to think a little more outside the box.

Furniture stores and furniture liquidators are full of great metal and wood decor pieces that can bring your space together. With an open mind and a little creativity, you can use these to spice up any kind of space whether it’s new or old. Depending on the vibe you’re trying to create, we’ve got a few ideas for how you can successfully blend metal and wood furniture pieces into your home.

Rustic Rules
A lot of people think a rustic decor means having a Tuscan-style dining area complete with long wooden benchesWhile that's a great element to add to your dining room, you can actually approach this differently to make it more practical.

The best way to do this is by first purchasing a wooden table that draws the eye. It can be an actual vintage piece or faux-vintage, but having that old and slightly worn look is great. Space permitting, it can be a nice long table with sturdy wooden legs to give a bolder frame.

After you’ve done that, it’s time to pick out some metal chairs. The thing you’re focusing on here is not to overpower the beautiful table you’ve just bought. Bring in some metal chairs that have a natural sheen to them without any added colour. These aren’t meant to be loud statement pieces. Instead, they should complement your table, which will likely be in a subtle, natural wood tone.

Industrial Is In
Take pretty much any movie you’ve ever seen set in New York City, and you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. Sure, exposed brick is one of the centrepieces of the industrial home style — but metal and wood are what bring it together.

A great way to give yourself that industrial look is to blend wood shelving with some metal elements. Pick a rich wood with lots of character and create a few wall-hanging shelves (you shouldn’t need more than two or three). Then, add some cool metal pieces like street signs or metal baskets. Whatever you choose as decoration pieces doesn’t matter too much as long as they pop against the wooden shelves.

Using the understated wooden shelves with different metal pieces will give your space that industrial look without having to rip apart your ceiling and expose all the wiring.

Modernize Your Metals and Woods
If you’re not into the rustic or industrial look, you can also go modern with your design when mixing metal and wood.

If you want to go modern, one of the biggest things to focus on is smoothness and polish. Think lacquered wood flooring with a nice shine to it that you can bring together with an ultra-chic metal coffee table in the living roomYou can also add some glass into the equation for some added flair when picking out what kind of metal pieces you want in your space.
