It’s a question as old as 720p — should you mount your TV to the wall or place it on a slick stand?

You’ve probably hit up enough furniture stores and furniture liquidators to know that there are plenty of options for whatever route you decide to go. At the end of the day, it really comes down to personal preference. However, there are some important things to consider before making this decision for the centrepiece of your living room, bedroom, or bathroom (we don’t judge).

You should ask yourself these three questions before coming to any conclusions and making a costly commitment.

What Kind of Space Do You Have?

This is a good starting point to decide whether you should get a wall mount or a stand for your TV. In order to determine what you need, take a look at the space you’re planning to put the TV into and investigate what would be the better fit.

If you’re in an apartment where space is a little tighter, you may only have limited room for another piece of bulky furniture. A wall mount may be an obvious choice then. But, say you have a bigger house with a larger living room, for example. Then you might want to use a TV stand because it adds to the overall decor of the space.

Of course, there are plenty of variables here as well. Some people like their TVs huge and some people prefer them a little more compact in their space. A massive TV on a stand in a smaller space is hard to make room for, but a smaller TV would probably look fine on an appropriately-sized stand.

It’s also important to consider whether you own your home or are renting. In a rental home or apartment, you might not even be allowed to make the necessary alterations to support a wall mount. You may be better off with a TV stand to avoid any future headaches with a landlord or strata.

What’s the Purpose?

For most people, the reason behind getting a wall mount for their TV is pretty simple: it looks clean and polished without a bunch of unnecessary old DVDs or video games piled underneath.

While that’s certainly true, there are some downsides. There’s no question that they look great, but there’s barely any practicality attached to them in terms of storage. Even if you don’t have a vast collection of DVDs or video games, there are other things people store on or in their TV stands that make them very useful.

That said, this all comes down to how much you actually need to store away on any given day. If you’re a minimalist soul then going to furniture stores and furniture liquidators to seek out a TV stand probably makes no sense. If you're one who needs some extra storage space, it’s definitely not a bad idea.

Are There Other Options?

Your requirements for how to place a TV aren’t always black and white. Sometimes, you want the cleanliness of a wall mount, with some of the utility of a TV stand. Luckily, furniture stores and furniture liquidators have some great options available for those of us who are stuck in-between.

TV wall units have become a hot item in recent years. These give you a nice taste of contemporary design mixed with a little bit of storage thrown in as well. A TV wall unit won’t give you all the benefits of a wall mount or TV stand exclusively, but they blend a lot of the best things about both if you’re unsure which one to get.
