All That Glitters: Decorating with Gold

Using metallics to decorate your home can transform your space. Of all the metals, gold is arguably the most glamorous. Follow these simple tips to bring a little luxury into your life.

Start with a neutral colour scheme. Let your golds shine by starting with a neutral backdrop. Brassy golds are gorgeous against darker palettes, while whiter or brighter golds look lovely with whites, greys and other paler shades.

Try the mini Midas touch. A great way to experiment with gold is to start with accessories. A hammered gold mirror, metallic throw pillows or an opulent medallion-hued ottoman lets you play without the commitment.

Go big. On the other hand, you can always make a statement. A shiny metallic accent wall or deep brushed gold sofa are about as luxurious as you can get in a room. If you're feeling bold, go for it.

Get golden in the bedroom. If you're not sure you're in love with glitz in the main rooms, the bedroom is a great place to incorporate a little glamour. A gold slipper chair with a sequinned throw pillow harkens back to old Hollywood. Gold leaf and other metallic textures can lend a sophisticated air to your sleeping quarters.

Brilliance in the bathroom. We expect to see gleaming metallics in the bathroom— especially chrome. However, brass or gold sink, bathtub and light fixtures add a surprising and beautiful air of elegance.
